November 19 (Saturday) Work Trip on Big Poplar Trail - Pocahontas State Park - Chesterfield
Help build a stone staircase on the new "hiking-only" Big Poplar Trail. The project is installing 28 stone steps on a portion of the park's newest trail. Our job will be to dig out the trail for a spot to seat the stone and then fill in around the edges once the stones are lowered in place. This is a major project for the park. It is an Eagle Scout Project approved by the park and supported by the Friends of Pocahontas State Park (FoPSP). Although this will be supervised work, ODATC's recent step building experience will be most helpful. We will be working alongside FoPSP and other volunteers. No need to sign up, just show up. No contact information was provided. This is an all day event. Park entrance is on Beach Road (Rt. 655) 4 miles west of Rt. 10 (Ironbridge Rd). Tell park entry staff that you are working on this Eagle Scout Project and you will not have to pay the parking fee. Meet and assemble with other volunteers at 9:00 AM in the small parking lot just beyond the entry station. We will then move to the work site. For anyone arriving a little late, meet the group at the Heritage Center, which is near the amphitheater. The trail work is to the left of the Heritage Center as you face the building. If you have trouble finding the group call the PARK OFFICE at 796-4255 for directions or ask Heritage Center/Nature Center staff for directions to Big Poplar Trail. Once on the trail proceed counterclockwise about 0.15 miles to the work site. Snacks, lunch and water will be provided. The Friends of Pocahontas will have power equipment to move the stone. You will need safety glasses, gloves and a water bottle. If you have any tools like a rogue hoe, shovel, rock bar or a rake then bring it. If you don't have those FoPSP will have plenty of tools for the people who show up.
NOTE: Seven ODATC members are on the FoPSP Hiking Trails Committee that worked hard to make this beautiful new 0.7 mile trail become a reality.
