July 9 (Thursday) Book Signing and Presentation by Leonard Atkins

Walkabout Outfitters, 3015 W. Cary St., Richmond, is pleased to announce a book signing from 5-7 pm and presentation beginning at 7 pm by ODATC member and author/hiker Leonard M. Adkins on Thursday, July 9, 2015. The signing features two of his newer books, Images of America: Along Virginia’s Appalachian Trail and the just-released Along the Appalachian Trail: West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, published by Arcadia Press and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Selected from archives of the conservancy, US National Park Service, and local A.T. maintaining clubs, the approximately 200 vintage photographs in each book provide a look at life in the mountains before and during the trail’s creation, how it came into being, who its early champions were, the many relocations the trail has experienced, and the volunteers who have constructed and maintained it. (Address updated!)

The presentation, Pulaskis, Relos, and Hobnailed Boots: A Pictorial History of Virginia’s Appalachian Trail (accompanied by authentic Appalachian folk music and live narration), features heretofore unpublished photographs, such as scenes from McAfee Knob in the early 20th century, the trail's original route through the state, the contributions of Richmond’s own Old Dominion Appalachian Trail Club, the creation of Shenandoah National Park, the efforts it takes to protect the pathway, and more.
